The Alt Protein Project

Duke University

What is APP

What is the Alt Protein Project?

The Alt Protein Project chapter of Duke University is a student organization affiliated with the Good Food Institute (GFI).

The program seeks to engage students with the alternative protein industry through an academic, professional, and scientific lens. Duke's Alt Protein Project chapter is for any student at Duke interested in the alternative protein space, regardless of background, degree, or area of study. The organization aims to develop and expand Duke's alternative protein ecosystem by fostering student engagement on campus, in the research triangle, and with the broader alt protein industry.

Why Alt Pro

Why Alternative Proteins?

Global meat consumption is at its highest historic levels, according to the UN. Our student organization believes in the benefits of modernizing meat and animal products. Alternatives created from plant-based ingredients, precision fermentation, and cellular agriculture present promising replacements for traditional meat and animal-derived products.

How the Duke Alt Protein Project supports students

1 / In the classroom

We aim to facilitate the development of multi-disciplinary coursework and research focused on alternative protein in order to offer students an in-depth understanding of various aspects of the industry.

2 / During recruiting

Through collaborations with industry professionals and peer-to-peer mentorship, we offer students insights into career opportunities in different areas of alternative protein. Our planned events include panel discussions with industry experts, coffee chats with organizations seeking talent, company visits, and more.

3 / Practical experience

We organize experiential learning projects such as pitch competitions and consulting projects focused on alternative protein in order to help students bridge the gap between theory and practice.

4 /  Life-long friendships

We aim to help build a tight-knit community of students interested in the industry through informal networking sessions, food tastings, and other events.
